Concept Designs for Shakespeare's most magical romanctic comedy, set in 1930s Appalachia
Lysander: Day Look
Lysander one of the young lovers who are caught up in the shenanigins in the forest. Lysander is young and carefree, in love with Hermia.
Lysander: Wedding Look
Lysander in his wedding attire. I would redo this with a brown suit, as opposed to the green, as I used that color for Titiana.
Hermia: Day Look
Hermia in her normal dress, I wanted her to mirror Lysander in her colors, with both having purple in their clothing
Hermia: Wedding Look
Hermia's wedding dress is less regal than Hippolyta and is supposed to be just her best dress, not a special dress for her wedding. It's color scheme mimics the passionflower, a native flower of Appalachia
Duke Theseus: Day Look
"Duke" Theseus, the mayor of Athens, OH, played by the same actor as Oberon
Duke Theseus: Wedding Look
Theseus is the richest person in town, and thus, the best dressed, but even he has to supplement his look with local flowers
Hippolyta: Day Look
Hippolyta "Lyta" is a forest dwelling huntress, wooed by Theseus, poorer than most, but adapting to her life as a wife
Hippolyta: Wedding Look
Hippolyta "Lyta" in her wedding attire. I wanted her wedding gown to be more sumptuous than the other brides, as she is the "queen" of the town now
The Mechanicals
Two of the mechanicals, Snug the Joiner and Francis Flute, as The Lion and Thisbe. Their costumes are cobbled together out of Appalachian found objects
Bottom: Human Look
Bottom in human form. I wanted to show that Bottom and the other Mechanicals are the least well off in town. Bottom's clothing is worn and patched, and well aged.
Bottom: Donkey Head
Bottom's Donkey head, with diagram to show how it works. His hat will have holes in it for the ears, and he'll find it later, leading him to question his "Dream"
Oberon
Oberon is played by the same actor as Theseus and based off of the look of Duke Ellington, with accents inspired by an owl
Robin Goodfellow (Puck)
Puck or Robin Goodfellow is based off of 1930s radio announcies and racoons, with a "mask" of freckles and bold, ring like patterns on his clothing
Titania: First Look
Titania is based off of Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker and a luna moth. Her gown mimics the insect's colors and the gold gauze makes "wings" on her back
Titania: Second Look
Titania in her robe, resembling a luna moth. Her robe has the same markings as the insect and a fluffy collar that mimics the animal's body
Titania: Third Look
Titania in her night gown, based off an existing 1930s gown, with a color that mimics that of a luna moth, and gold stitching to add some sparkle
